1,000 participants from 55 countries / official launch of the EWF Energy Web Chain/Ocyan is Innovator of the Year / preview 4th EventHorizon 2020
Berlin, June 2019: From 19 to 20 June, around 1,000 participants from over 55 countries – including more than 20 exhibitors, 20 start-ups and more than 110 international top speakers from the energy industry – came together at the Kraftwerk Berlin for the world’s leading energy blockchain conference “EventHorizon” to present practical concepts and solutions for the future of the global energy market and to actively push the green energy transition.
The agenda of the 3rd energy summit approved the innovative nature of EventHorizon as the industry’s key event. Ground-breaking agreements have been concluded to drive forward the implementation of transparent, sovereign, stable and cost-effective blockchain technology at the energy grid and distribution levels.
The two-day event program focused on political, legal, regulatory challenges, new investment strategies and the potential of blockchain technology to contribute a trend-setting impulse to tackle climate change. Discussions such as the Peer to Peer Panel or the Demand Response Panel addressed the digitization of the energy transition and the “Regulatory Issues”, which are particularly challenging for start-ups, and thematised also energy as a human right, the future of e-mobility and access to electricity grids. Usage data, access to business model control loops and access to basic finance were high on the speaker agenda of Kerstin Eichmann, Managing Director – Innogy Innovation Hub, Maria McKavanagh, COO – Verv, Dr. Christoph Frei, Secretary General & CEO – World Energy Council and Chris Peeters, CEO – Elia.
Energy Web Foundation (EWF) launches Energy Web Chain
Furthermore, the Energy Web Foundation (EWF) launched the Energy Web Chain, which was developed specifically for the energy market. Also, the are 15+ dApps running on Energy Web test networks that will be expected to move onto the live Energy Web Chain in the coming weeks. Many of the largest energy companies in the world, such as Shell, Siemens, TEPCO, Centrica, Iberdrola and Engie, are cooperating with the most successful innovators in the field of energy blockchain such as FlexiDAO, OLI Systems, Share&Charge Foundation and Wirepas.
The Energy Web Chain is a scalable open source blockchain platform designed specifically for the regulatory, operational and (socio-economic) market needs of the energy sector. The digital platform serves as a basic, shared infrastructure for the energy and blockchain community to build and operate their solutions and strategies for the global energy sector. The Energy Web Chain dispenses with the power-draining proof of work (PoW) concept, but relies instead on the more energy efficient proof of authority (PoA).
With this event highlight of the summit, a milestone in the energy blockchain technology was achieved. “The Energy Web Chain is now running in production mode. Our next target, to be reached by the fourth quarter of 2019 at the latest, is the complete decentralization of the chain. At this point, it will no longer be “our” chain. It it will be the energy sector’s blockchain – the first public blockchain where blocks are validated by energy sector companies“, says Hervé Touati, co-founder and CEO of the Energy Web Foundation (EWF).

From this crucial moment, a CO2-reduced, consumer-centered electricity system is moving ever closer. In the coming weeks and months, more apps will go live and will massively accelerate innovation developments in the energy industry. In general, it is expected that more end consumers will be involved in the innovation process.
Ocyan is EventHorizon Innovator of the Year
After the world’s top 20 energy blockchain start-ups presented their business models and custom solutions in 15-minute pitches during the summit, event participants selected the most innovative newcomer: with 35 percent of all votes, Ocyan won the Top of the Horizon Award in the category “Innovator of the Year”. Evangelos Pappasa, CEO of Ocyan, sees the innovation power of the London-based company fully confirmed: “We enable F.I., Oil & Gas, Energy and Logistics enterprises to unlock their production-readiness potentials for Blockchain applications by providinga PaaS that offers all the required infrastructure and analytics in the click of the button.”
