Internationally acclaimed mixed-media artist Mildred Howard brings her powerful and moving work to the digital world in a series of images featuring African American youth faded into silhouette; now on auction on OpenSea
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Decrypt Studios, the Web3 production house that partners with brands and creators to curate NFT and metaverse activations, is pleased to announce a new NFT collaboration with celebrated artist, sculptor, and designer Mildred Howard. The collection, titled “Millennials & XYZ,” features a series of images depicting the silhouettes of African American youth. Howard's first ever NFT collection will drop on OpenSea on Monday, February 28th, the final day of Black History Month, with the auction concluding Monday, March 7th.
Howard grew up in Berkeley, California. The daughter of prominent civil rights activists, she has long been an advocate for social justice, both through her art and in her personal life. Her work on the “Millennials & XYZ” collection began five years ago and was spurred by the killings of young black men such as Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown. To better understand the lives of African American youth and how they were affected by these tragedies, Howard set out to learn more directly from young Black men and women in her community.
“I wanted to talk with these young people about their lives, to capture them in the way they look and dress, to hear their opinion about what life was like for them,” Howard said. “Most of the young people I spoke with were brilliant human beings trying to navigate their way through this maze and society that we live in today. They happened to be people of color; but there is only one race—the human race.”
By using her art as a way to view the world and address issues like social justice, Howard hopes to inspire a new generation to dream up new ideas. She believes NFTs add a new dimension to the art market and another way to get her work in front of different audiences. “As an artist, you’re continuously trying to learn and improve what you do. Exploring new avenues helps in my growth as an artist; it’s an ongoing exploration of ideas and creative ways of thinking, making, and doing. I’m interested in pushing the boundaries.”
